Social Emotional Learning

What is Social Emotional Learning?

Welcome to the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) site for Adams Elementary School.

Social Emotional Learning helps kids better manage their feelings, thoughts, and emotions through building-wide and small group interventions. Topics may include bullying, conflict resolution, behavior in and out of class, trauma/grief issues, handling stress, and staff wellness initiatives.

The five core areas addressed by SEL are: self awareness, self management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making. These areas are taught through various programs such as Second Step, PBIS, or Zones of Regulation. The goal is to make our students better citizens in and out of school and to prepare them for better mental health overall.

Schoolwide SEL

At Adams Elementary, we use the following programs/practices schoolwide to support SEL:

  • Positive Behavior Supports/SOAR tickets
  • Restorative Practices
  • Second Step

Parent Resources

Bibliotherapy

There is great power in books to teach, connect, and heal. Reading with your child is a wonderful way to help you gently introduce topics that may be sensitive or to help your child learn coping strategies. Books That Heal Kids is a good website for help on finding books on just about every topic.

Some of my favorite authors & books include:

There are also many apps and CDs for guided relaxation if your child has stress or sleep issues. Some of my favorite phone apps are the Calm, Headspace, and Mood Meter apps. The Relaxation & Self Regulation CD for Children & Teens CD or Guided Meditations website are also good choices.

For tips on handling your student's use of electronics, see below.

What is Social Emotional Learning (SEL)?

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which students and adults gain and apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to deal effectively with daily tasks and challenges.

Jeffco has adopted the five core competencies of SEL outlined by the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL).

  • Self-Awareness
  • Self-Management
  • Social Awareness
  • Relationship Skills
  • Responsible Decision-Making (CASEL, 2020)

SEL happens in safe and supportive school, family and community environments that support development and provide opportunities and recognition for successfully applying skills.
