Health Services
Health Room
At Adams Elementary, we are concerned for the health and well-being of all of our students. Our health room is available for those children who become ill or are injured at school. If a child runs a temperature of 100 degrees, is deemed truly ill, or has an injury that appears to require medical attention, families will be called and will be expected to come for their child as soon as possible.
Most students use the health room completely appropriately. If we deem that a student is overusing the health room we will contact families and create a plan to support the student.
The health room is located in the main office.
For the safety of our students, they must have a pass from a teacher to come to the health room except in the case of an emergency.
Adams does not have a full-time nurse. The health room aide can help determine if a student needs to go home. No diagnoses of any kind are made at school; this can only be done by your own health professional.
Students not feeling well will not be allowed to walk home except with special permission from the principal/assistant principal and the parent/guardian.
Medications at School
If your child must take medication at school, the following procedures are District Health Services requirements from the Colorado Health Department and they are mandatory. We cannot make any exceptions on this policy.
Medication of any kind (prescription or non-prescription/over the counter) is to be brought into the office by a parent in its ORIGINAL CONTAINER.
Parents must sign the district form for dispensing medication. If the medication is prescribed by a health care provider then both the parent and the physician must sign the form. Prescription medication must have the child’s name on it and the pharmacy labeled container suffices for the physician’s signature if the medication is to be given under fourteen days.
The district form for dispensing medication can be obtained from the school website, health room aide or secretary.
We cannot dispense any medication unless a district form is completed and on file in the health room.
Students are NOT to carry any medication with them to school, at school, or from school to home. Medications may only be brought to school and picked up from school by a parent/guardian. Medication of any kind brought to school in baggies, envelopes, etc. will not be accepted. Any medication not picked up by the end of the school year will be disposed of according to District Health Services Guidelines.
Immunizations at School
Immunization requirements will be strictly enforced for all students. Per Colorado Law all students enrolled in a Colorado Public School must have a minimum number of required immunizations or submit a completed personal or religious exemption ANNUALLY to the school health aide in order to begin school. Additional information on immunization requirements along with exemption forms can be found on the Jeffco Public Schools website under Health Services. Please contact the Health Aide for current immunization requirements. Students who do not meet these requirements will be denied attendance according to Colorado Revised Statutes 25-4-902.
Medical Forms
Jeffco families must submit a medical provider-signed agreement if their student requires medication during the school day.
Mental Health Supports
Betty Adams promotes a safe, positive learning environment by supporting mental health.
Jeffco Public Schools recognizes the growing concern with injuries resulting in concussion or concussion-like symptoms. Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), or concussion, in children is a rapidly growing public health concern.
Jeffco Public Schools partners with Hazel Health, Inc. to provide free, additional physical and mental health care services for students. This a telehealth extension of support to Jeffco students enrolled at district-managed schools.
Jeffco Public Schools' Certified Application Assistance Site (CAAS) operates through the Jeffco Public Schools Community and Family Connections (CFC) program. CFC assists any individuals inquiring about Health First Colorado (Medicaid), Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+) and other health-related resources.
Hearing and vision screenings are conducted for students in their schools according to the Colorado Department of Education guidelines.
The Department of Health Services at Jeffco Public Schools recognizes that any student or family can have lice. Jeffco’s district nurses follow several protocols and are an excellent resource for school administration, teachers, parents and families.
Parents and guardians of Jeffco Public Schools students can purchase student accident, athletic and dental insurance coverage.
Health Services in Jeffco
Jeffco Public Schools' Department of Health Services provides health consultation and resources to support students and their families.
Each school has a district Registered Nurse (RN) who consults with students, families, school staff and administration. Ask your student’s school for their district RN contact details and notify the RN if your student has a health need that requires support during the school day.
Each school also has a school health aide who does day-to-day care of students such as medication, Band-Aids, and ice.
Keep your student’s health concerns updated at registration and as conditions change during the school year. It is important for Jeffco to have current contact information of families.
When Students and Staff Should Stay Home
Jeffco follows the recommendations from Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) on when students and staff should stay home from school, work or childcare. District RNs provide guidance to school administration following the How Sick is Too Sick document.
The best ways to stop the spread of infection is through good hand washing and staying home when sick.
Immunizations
Colorado law requires all students attending Colorado schools and licensed childcare centers to be vaccinated against certain diseases unless a medical or non-medical exemption is filed.
For information about vaccine requirements, resources and exemptions, visit the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s School-Required Vaccines page.
